Lightning strikes caused several fires across the Netherlands as severe thunderstorms swept the country. Authorities have issued an orange weather warning for heavy storms accompanied by lightning.
At a farm in Onnerweg, two calves died after lightning struck the property. Firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to nearby stables, allowing 150 cows to escape unharmed. The farm owner had earlier moved the horses to safety.
In Utrecht, lightning struck the roof of a house with a thatched roof on the Linschoterdijk in Snelrewaard, causing a major fire. Firefighters said no one was inside the property when the fire broke out.
In Boskoop, South Holland, lightning ignited a hay barn. The roof collapsed, but firefighters prevented the flames from spreading to an adjoining shed and house. No one was injured.
Firefighters also responded to a lightning strike in Amsterdam South, where the roof of a building caught fire. According to local broadcaster AT5, lightning also struck the Pontsteiger building. However, the building’s lightning protection system appears to have prevented any damage.
