Pharmaceutical giants Moderna and Merck & Co, known as MSD in the Netherlands, have reported positive results from an ongoing trial for a personalized cancer vaccine. The companies state that their vaccine significantly reduces the likelihood of melanoma returning in high-risk skin cancer patients.
Preventing tumor spread and regulatory timeline
The study also demonstrated that the treatment helps prevent tumors from spreading to other areas of the body. However, the companies have not yet released full data on overall recurrence-free survival periods, as the study remains ongoing to determine whether vaccinated patients achieve longer overall survival rates.
Target launch aimed for 2027
Moderna and Merck plan to discuss their findings with regulatory agencies to initiate the approval process. Although approval is not guaranteed, both companies hope to secure regulatory authorization by 2027. This development marks a key milestone after more than a decade of joint scientific research into mRNA-based cancer therapies.
