High fuel prices drive shift to electric transit
More Dutch holidaymakers are taking their electric cars on vacation this year. High fuel prices are driving this shift, according to research and data from fast-charging company Fastned.
In the first three weeks of July, Fastned recorded nearly 50 percent more charging sessions by Dutch drivers at its foreign locations compared to the same period last year. Fastned reports that 55 percent of electric vehicle owners plan to use their cars for summer travel. More than half state that high petrol and diesel prices influenced their decision, while 12 percent cite fuel costs as the primary reason.
Lower running costs and environmental gains attract drivers
Beyond avoiding high pump prices, drivers benefit from substantially lower running costs per kilometer when using electricity over fossil fuels. EV owners also enjoy lower ongoing maintenance expenses due to fewer moving parts under the hood.
Additionally, drivers benefit from smoother acceleration, quieter cabin environments, and the ability to travel through zero-emission urban zones across Europe without facing restricted access or extra municipal fees.
Electric vehicle sales continue rapid expansion
The total number of electric cars on Dutch roads continues to grow rapidly. In the first half of this year, consumers bought 63,776 new fully electric cars, according to automotive industry organizations BOVAG and RAI Vereniging. Fully electric vehicles captured a 37 percent market share during this period, while hybrid models accounted for 54 percent of all sales.
