RIVM deactivates alert following extended heatwave
The National Heat Plan will officially expire on Wednesday at 8:00 AM, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). Authorities initially activated the warning system on July 29 for Limburg, Noord-Brabant, Gelderland, and Overijssel before expanding it nationwide on August 3.
This instance marked the third time health officials triggered the heat plan this year.
The National Heat Plan aims to raise awareness among caregivers looking after vulnerable populations during periods of high temperatures. When active, the RIVM urges people to drink sufficient fluids, keep living spaces cool, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours.
KNMI maintains code yellow briefly ahead of weekend cooling
Despite the deactivation of the health alert, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) keeps a code yellow warning active through Wednesday.
Forecasters expect a warm overnight period from Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Highs will reach 27 degrees Celsius during the day on Wednesday before temperatures drop steadily nationwide over the following days.
