Industry forecasts show that around 384,000 new passenger cars will be sold in 2026. This figure is expected to remain largely in line with 2025 levels. However, new car sales are projected to decline in 2027, with registrations forecast to fall to approximately 371,000 vehicles.
Several factors are expected to influence the Dutch automotive market. Changes to tax rules for company vehicles will increase costs for both electric lease cars and company cars powered by internal combustion engines, including plug-in hybrids. These higher costs could reduce demand for new passenger cars in the coming years.
The industry also points to broader economic challenges. Moderate economic growth and a slight decline in household purchasing power are expected to put additional pressure. Uncertainty surrounding fuel prices is another concern. Pump prices increased significantly this year amid geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, and it remains unclear how fuel costs will evolve next year.
While the passenger car market is expected to weaken, sales of new vans are forecast to continue recovering. The sector is rebounding from a sharp downturn in 2025 following the removal of a tax exemption for vans equipped with internal combustion engines.
