NS will offer discounted tickets in September to travellers who choose trains outside rush hour. The railway operator hopes the offer will help spread passenger numbers more evenly and make it easier for more people to find a seat.
According to NS, September is traditionally its busiest month. However, the company says many trains still have plenty of available seats.
“As an example, if 6 per cent of travellers switched from the 07:46 Sprinter from Den Haag Mariahoeve to Leiden Centraal to the quieter Sprinter 15 minutes earlier, everyone could find a seat on both trains,” NS said.
The discount is designed to encourage travellers to take a quieter train slightly earlier or later than they normally would. Discounted tickets must be purchased at least one day in advance.
