NS resolves problems triggered by high subscription demand

Share

NS has resolved the login problems that affected passengers on Tuesday. An overnight IT failure had prevented users from logging into their personal accounts. An NS spokesperson stated that exceptionally high digital traffic on Monday caused the crash.

High demand for summer subscription

The technical failure occurred after NS launched a popular summer subscription on Monday. The promotion allows passengers to travel without restrictions during off-peak hours. The ticket costs a fixed price of 49 euros per month throughout the holiday season. Interest in the promotion was multiple times higher than normal. This traffic triggered an unexpected reaction within the IT infrastructure and crashed the system. NS confirmed that the malfunction would not have occurred without Monday’s overwhelming traffic.

Government funding and website congestion

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management provided 118 million euros to fund the transport discount. The government allocated this subsidy to offset costs for the railway operator. Ministers also hoped to encourage public transport use during the quieter summer months.

Demand for the subscription significantly exceeded initial expectations. The surge in visitors immediately congested the official website. This high volume created performance issues on Monday, caused slow loading times, and left many customers struggling to complete their purchases through the online webshop.
