NS will introduce line numbers across all train services starting with the 2027 timetable. The operator believes this will make planning, travelling, and transferring more intuitive for passengers. “During unexpected disruptions and maintenance work, line numbers can be a major improvement in communication because you mention not only destinations but also the corresponding line number. This makes your train easier to recognise”, explained Dieuwertje van Egmond, Head of Travel Information.
To ensure clarity and comfort for travellers, NS will run a live test at Amersfoort Centraal next week. Passengers will be invited to share their experiences with the new line numbers as they appear in the NS app and on station display screens. Their feedback will help determine how the numbering is ultimately integrated into travel information.
NS also plans to introduce a redesigned national route map featuring the new line numbers on station information boards. A public design competition is now open, and the winning map will be selected in September.
