Official groundbreaking for ASML expansion at BIC Noord

Share

Construction has officially begun for the expansion of ASML at the northern section of the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC). On 10 March, Eindhoven City Council approved the development, leading to a symbolic “ground breaking” ceremony today. This marks the beginning of site preparations for the new campus, with full construction expected to start later this year.

The global chip industry anticipates significant growth driven by artificial intelligence and rising demand. To meet this, ASML plans to build a major facility at BIC Noord. “This is a blueprint for how we in the Netherlands and Europe should deal with strategic economic challenges,” said Alderperson Stijn Steenbakkers. He noted that the project progressed from ASML’s initial inquiry in 2023 to breaking ground in under two years, supported by the national “Operation Beethoven” investment in public infrastructure.

The Municipality of Eindhoven is currently preparing the land for the first phase of the campus, which will include cleanrooms, offices, and new roads. Work is starting in the southwestern area, near Dirk Noordhoflaan, where ecological measures are also being taken to protect local wildlife, such as toads. The municipality will lease the first portion of the land to ASML once these preparations are complete, with development scheduled for the second quarter of 2026.

Ensuring the area remains accessible is a high priority. Alderperson Robert Strijk explained that the city is investing heavily in sustainable infrastructure, including widening roads, building an underpass beneath the A58 motorway, and creating fast public transport and cycle routes.

ASML intends to keep its core research, production, and service activities close to its main headquarters in Veldhoven. The phased expansion at BIC Noord could eventually provide space for approximately 20,000 workplaces. Frank Heemskerk, EVP Global Public Affairs at ASML, welcomed the council’s support, calling the start of site preparation an important milestone for the company’s regional growth.

Cooperation

The project required coordinated planning procedures among the municipalities of Eindhoven, Best, and Oirschot, as well as the Province of North Brabant. All parties reached a positive decision on 10 March. The formal environmental plans and permits are available for public inspection and appeal from 14 March until 24 April 2026.
