Share

Philips has secured the top spot for medical technology patent applications at the European Patent Office (EPO) for 2025. The Dutch health technology leader filed 1,289 patent applications in total during the year, remaining the largest applicant from the Netherlands. Within the medical technology category, the company submitted 676 applications, many of which involve artificial intelligence.

Marnix van Ginneken, a member of the Philips Board of Management, stated that this success reflects the company’s focus on meaningful innovation in healthcare and self-care. He noted that the company’s strategy relies on data, AI, and platform-based solutions to improve care for more people.

The company’s recent innovations include helium-free MRI technology that uses AI to deliver sharper images up to three times faster than traditional methods. Other developments include the LumiGuide 3D Device Guidance, which uses light rather than X-rays to help doctors navigate the human body, and a dedicated AI marketplace for cardiac care teams.

Philips also continues to innovate in consumer electronics, recently launching AI-powered shavers and hands-free breast pumps based on decades of research. In 2025, the company invested more than 9% of its sales revenue into research and development. This investment supports a massive intellectual property portfolio that includes approximately 53,000 patent rights and 31,500 trademarks.

The company reports that its innovations improved the lives of 2 billion people in 2025. Philips aims to increase this figure to 2.5 billion people annually by 2030, with a specific focus on reaching 400 million people in medically underserved communities. For the 13th consecutive year, the company also earned a place on the Clarivate Top 100 Global Innovator list.

Philips has maintained its position as the top Dutch applicant at the European Patent Office, leading the way in medical technology. The company filed over 1,200 patents in 2025, focusing heavily on AI-driven healthcare solutions and sustainable diagnostic imaging. These innovations are part of a broader goal to improve billions of lives globally by the end of the decade.
