Historic participation highlights LGBTQ+ rights
Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten arrived at the Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam on Saturday morning for the annual Canal Parade. Mayor Femke Halsema greeted him at the departure point. Jetten joined the official organization’s boat to sail a portion of the route. His appearance marks a historic moment, as Jetten is the first openly gay Prime Minister of the Netherlands.
Addressing recent negative commentary about his sexuality on Radio 10, Jetten stated that people must get used to a gay prime minister.
The Canal Parade raises awareness and promotes visibility for the LGBTQ+ community. This year’s event coincides with WorldPride and focuses on the central theme of “Unity.”
Crowds line canals to celebrate inclusion and free love
Massive crowds gathered along the canal banks early on Saturday. Hundreds of private boats also packed the waterways to watch the main procession.
Eighty decorated ships participated in the parade. Performers on each boat broadcast the message of unity using music and dance.
Mayor Halsema chose to sail the entire parade route. She emphasized that Amsterdam must show its core values and defend free love. Halsema noted that public acceptance of LGBTQ+ individuals faces growing pressure worldwide, making public advocacy essential.
