Real estate advisor: fewer rental homes for years to come due to a wave of sales

Investors are selling large numbers of former rental homes, and this trend will leave the Netherlands with very few private rental properties for years. Real estate advisor CBRE says the shortage already affects students and young first‑time buyers, the FD reported on Monday.

CBRE’s figures show that institutional investors, including insurers and pension funds, invested more than €2.7 billion in the Dutch housing market in the first half of this year. This amount is over 40 percent higher than in the same period last year. They bought 4,391 new‑build homes and 4,377 existing homes.

Even with this increase, house hunters in the private rental sector gain almost no extra choice. CBRE expects investors to sell about nine out of ten of these homes. The organisation believes the real share is even higher because private investors also continue to sell off their rental properties.
