Enexis reaches record high in power grid investment

Share

Enexis invested a record-breaking amount in the electricity grid throughout 2025, yet the company warns that the demand for capacity is outstripping the pace of expansion. Serving the provinces of Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, North Brabant, and Limburg, the grid operator poured €1.9 billion into reinforcing and broadening the network. This significant expenditure funded the installation of more than 1,600 kilometres of cabling and the construction of hundreds of electricity substations, alongside the addition of approximately 23,000 new connections.

Despite these efforts, the operator has cautioned that the network remains at full capacity in many areas. The backlog for businesses seeking new or upgraded high-capacity connections has surged to over 10,000 applications. Chief Executive Rutger van der Leeuw has indicated that residential households may also begin to experience longer waiting times in the coming years as the system struggles to keep up with demand.

Furthermore, these substantial investments are placing a heavy strain on the firm’s finances. Last year, Enexis’s expenditure on the grid exceeded its income from customer tariffs by more than €2 million per day.
