The number of residential burglaries in the Netherlands declined significantly in the third quarter, ending the upward trend seen during the first half of the year.
Police recorded fewer than 4,500 burglaries between July and September, down from around 4,900 incidents during the same period in 2025. According to an ANP analysis of police data, this represents the largest third-quarter decline since 2022.
More than half of the Dutch provinces reported fewer burglaries. The steepest drop was recorded in Overijssel, where the number of reported break-ins almost halved, falling from 312 cases in the third quarter of last year to 161 this year.
Regional differences
While most provinces saw a decline, burglars struck more often in four provinces. In South Holland, the number of recorded burglaries remained unchanged compared with the same period a year earlier.
The latest figures contrast with developments earlier in 2026. During the first and second quarters, police registered around 10,000 burglaries, slightly above the 9,800 cases reported in the first half of 2025. The increase that emerged early in the year did not continue into the third quarter.
The ANP has asked police for an explanation for the latest decline in burglary figures.
