Rijkswaterstaat activated its heat protocol on Tuesday due to high temperatures. The protocol came into force at 10:00, a spokesperson said. According to Weeronline, temperatures could reach up to 33°C.
Under the protocol, extra measures are in place to help motorists who break down on the motorway. Recovery vehicles are sent immediately after a report. They take stranded motorists to a safe location, such as a petrol station or parking area, where facilities are available. These measures apply between 10:00 and 20:00 on the days the protocol is active.
The protocol is in effect across the Netherlands, except in the province of Friesland. Rijkswaterstaat aims to reduce the time people spend waiting on hot asphalt. Road surface temperatures can rise above 50°C during extreme heat.
