Rijkswaterstaat: sharp decrease in freight traffic on the Merwede Bridge

Share

Freight traffic on the Merwedebrug has dropped sharply since Rijkswaterstaat installed special cameras over the weekend. A spokesperson said this during a press briefing at the bridge and noted that the organisation does not yet have exact figures.

Rijkswaterstaat expects the number of violations to fall further. The spokesperson explained that the organisation only started enforcing and communicating the truck ban this week. He said drivers need time to learn about the measure, but increased attention and enforcement should continue to reduce the number of crossings.

On Monday, officials began analysing camera footage that shows the licence plates of offenders. Rijkswaterstaat said it cannot yet share how many fines they issued. The organisation also reported no progress in its investigation into problems with the steel in the bridge’s arches.
