Smog alert: RIVM warns of poor air quality

Share

The RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) warns that air quality will become “poor” in the central and southern regions of the country on Wednesday and Thursday due to smog. On Wednesday, smog risks are highest in parts of Flevoland, Utrecht, and the central and western areas of Noord-Brabant. On Thursday, the pollution will shift south of the line connecting Leiden, Amersfoort, and Apeldoorn.

How smog forms and affects health

Smog develops when air pollution accumulates on sunny days with very little wind. This pollution can trigger respiratory complaints, including coughing and shortness of breath. It also worsens asthma symptoms and reduces overall lung function.

Health advice for vulnerable groups

The RIVM advises sensitive individuals to stay indoors and avoid heavy physical exertion. Children, the elderly, and asthma patients are particularly vulnerable to smog. This advice applies especially to the late afternoon and early evening, when air pollution levels peak.
