Summer train fare discounts to launch on 21 June

Share

The government is planning to launch a discounted off-peak rail pass on 21 June to help passengers save money over the summer. Valid until 1 September, the scheme allows unlimited off-peak travel for just €49 a month. This is a massive saving compared to the usual price of €127.95.

The idea was originally proposed to help people cope with the rising cost of living. To get the passes ready by summer, parliament must first approve a budget change. The €118 million plan will be paid for using unspent money from national climate and transport funds.

Infrastructure State Secretary Annet Bertram hopes the ticket will ease the pressure on household budgets. She noted that the plan fits the government’s goal of making public transport more affordable, especially after years of price hikes by rail operator NS. After the summer, officials will look at the data to see if the cheap ticket can stay for good.

Existing season ticket holders will also get the discount automatically. NS Chief Executive Wouter Koolmees welcomed the plan, saying it is excellent that public transport is being used to help people deal with rising fuel costs.
