The southeast of the Netherlands recorded another very hot day on Monday, with temperatures rising above 35°C. According to Weeronline, this marks the seventh regional heat day of the year, equaling the record set in 2020.
A regional “very hot day” is counted when temperatures exceed 35°C anywhere in the country. On Monday, this happened in three Limburg locations – Maastricht (35.5°C), Ell (35.2°C), and Horst (35.1°C).
Earlier this year, extremely hot days were all recorded on June and July 29. The highest temperature of 2026 so far was measured on June 26 in Ell, reaching 39.4°C. Last year, the Netherlands saw two regional very hot days. The national temperature record for August 3 stands at 36.6°C, set in 1986.
Weeronline notes that extremely hot days are becoming far more common due to climate warming. Since 2000, sixteen different years have included at least one regional very hot day. In the past decade, only 2021, 2023, and 2024 had none.
