Warnings about poor water quality are being issued at a growing number of swimming locations in the Netherlands, according to an ANP analysis of data from Zwemwater.nl.
At the end of June, warnings about potential health risks were in place at 46 locations. That number has now risen to 104 swimming sites.
The Netherlands has around 950 official swimming locations. These include lakes, ponds and recreational waters. They are regularly tested for issues such as blue-green algae and harmful bacteria.
The number of locations with a negative swimming advisory has also increased. Swimming is currently discouraged at 56 sites. On 23 June, a negative swimming advisory was in place at 35 locations.
Despite the increase in warnings, water quality remains safe at most sites. People can swim without health risks at 781 locations.
Water quality can deteriorate during long periods of warm weather. Swimming locations will continue to be monitored until 1 October, when the swimming season ends.
