The Netherlands generated 8.1 billion kilos of household waste last year, averaging 449 kilos per resident. That is 6 kilos less than in 2024. The decline is mainly linked to a reduction in collected vegetable, fruit, and garden waste (GFT).
Per person, municipalities collected 87 kilos of organic waste, down from around 92 kilos the year before. Bulky garden waste also fell. Statistics Office (CBS) notes that dry weather conditions resulted in slower plant growth, reducing the need for pruning and removal.
Residual waste remained the largest waste stream, as in previous years. Municipalities collected 179 kilos per inhabitant, nearly unchanged from 2024. Residual waste includes all household waste that is not separated.
In 2025, about 60 percent of household waste was collected separately — a figure that has barely shifted since 2019. CBS points out that urban density and the prevalence of high‑rise housing influence separation rates, as apartment buildings often have limited space for multiple waste containers.
