Albert Heijn will stop delivering groceries nationwide from 3:00 PM on Friday because of the extreme heat expected later in the day. With the KNMI issuing a code red warning for high temperatures across most of the country, the supermarket chain says it is not responsible for sending delivery staff on the road. “Although this is very inconvenient for our customers, the safety and health of our colleagues come first”, a spokesperson said.
First time
It is the first time the KNMI has ever issued a red alert for heat. The warning currently applies to eight provinces, where residents are advised to stay out of the sun, avoid physical exertion, and seek cool spaces. Zeeland, Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe are under an orange alert, and the Wadden Islands are under yellow. But the supermarket’s delivery stop applies nationwide.
Albert Heijn expects to resume deliveries on Saturday morning. Until then, customers are asked to visit stores in person or reschedule their orders.
Measures
Employees working in stores and distribution centres are also receiving heat‑related support. They may wear lighter clothing and are provided with cooling drinks, ice cream, and snacks.
Store supplies will continue as normal. “On the road, the rule of thumb is safety before timeliness”, the spokesperson added.
