Albert Heijn will stop grocery deliveries nationwide from 3:00 PM on Friday due to the KNMI’s code red heat warning. The supermarket says employee safety comes first. Deliveries are expected to resume Saturday morning, while customers are asked to visit stores or reschedule orders.

The KNMI has expanded its code orange extreme heat warning to include the northern provinces of Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen starting Friday at midnight. While the rest of the Netherlands has been under a code orange warning since Wednesday, the northern region will transition from code yellow, while the Wadden Islands will enter a code yellow alert. Meteorologists have also extended the duration of the national warnings until at least Friday midday, with a strong likelihood that the extreme heat alerts will continue through Saturday.

Forecasters have added to an existing yellow heat warning with an alert for severe thunderstorms and large hail across the country this Friday afternoon. While the heatwave triggers the RIVM’s National Heat Plan everywhere except the Wadden Islands, the KNMI has warned that the breaking weather could bring sudden wind gusts and hail up to 4 centimetres in diameter, following a night of heavy downpours in the south.
