KNMI issues warning for thunderstorms and severe wind gusts

Share

Forecasters have added to the existing yellow heat warning by alerting the public to potential thunderstorms brewing for Friday afternoon. The KNMI warned that the breaking weather could trigger sudden, disruptive wind gusts and hailstorms.

While the heat warning and the RIVM’s National Heat Plan remain active across the entire country—sparing only the Wadden Islands—the focus has shifted to the late-afternoon risk of severe storms. Although the weather institute emphasised that the development of these storms is not yet a certainty, it cautioned that any that do break out could be severe. If they materialise, they risk bringing damaging wind gusts and large hail measuring between 2 and 4 centimetres.

This latest weather threat follows a turbulent night for the south of the country, which has already been battered by heavy downpours and strong winds heading into Friday morning.
