The KNMI (Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut) will expand its code orange extreme heat warning to the northern provinces of Drenthe, Friesland, and Groningen starting Friday. The weather service will also issue a code geel (yellow) warning for the Wadden Islands on that day.

Gradual escalation across provinces

Until Friday, a less severe code yellow warning remains active for the three northern provinces, while the Wadden Islands currently face no weather warnings. In contrast, the rest of the Netherlands has been under a code orange warning since Wednesday afternoon.

The upgraded code orange warning for the north and the code yellow warning for the Wadden Islands will take effect at midnight on Thursday night.

Heatwave warnings extended

The weather service has extended the heat warnings across the country. The KNMI currently sets the end time for Friday at 12:00, whereas previous estimates targeted 08:00. Forecasters note a high probability that the warnings will remain active even longer, potentially lasting through Saturday.
