Eindhoven hosts the first City Nature Challenge

Share

Eindhoven will host its first City Nature Challenge from 24 to 27 April 2026. For four days, we encourage residents to search for and document local plants, animals, fungi, and aquatic life to help map urban biodiversity. We invite everyone to participate in this global initiative to discover the variety of nature within the city.

Participants can join by creating a free account on the platform Waarneming.nl via its app or website. During the challenge, residents should head outdoors to photograph various species and upload their findings to the platform. Participants can choose to join organised excursions or contribute by documenting nature in their own backyards.

Alderperson Rik Thijs welcomed the initiative, noting that it is inspiring to see local green organisations collaborate to raise awareness about urban biodiversity. He added that the data collected during the weekend will help make Eindhoven more wildlife-friendly and healthier for everyone.

The event is a joint effort between the Municipality of Eindhoven and six nature organisations, including KNNV, De Wasven, Trefpunt Groen Eindhoven, Stichting Stadsnatuur, IVN Veldhoven Eindhoven Vessem, and Natuurmonumenten. Frederique van Gool and Bo Hoppenbrouwers, two graduating communications students from Fontys University of Applied Sciences, are organising the challenge.
