Tanking has become a little more affordable this week, offering motorists a rare moment of relief. According to figures from UnitedConsumers, petrol and diesel prices fell noticeably between Monday and Thursday. A litre of petrol became 5 cents cheaper, while diesel dropped by 6 cents. A shift that signals a hopeful turn after months of high fuel costs.
Optimism
The decline in prices follows a drop in global oil prices. Markets reacted positively to renewed optimism about the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important shipping routes for oil. Iran announced on Wednesday that it had reached an agreement with Oman on shipping routes through the strait. Since the outbreak of the Iran war in late February, tanker traffic has been heavily restricted, pushing up oil prices worldwide. The prospect of smoother transport is now helping to ease pressure on fuel costs.
Brighter outlook
On Thursday, a litre of Euro95 cost €2.575, down from €2.62 on Monday. Diesel showed a similar improvement, falling from €2.657 to €2.593 per litre. These recommended prices are typically charged along motorways, meaning drivers elsewhere in the country often pay even less. With oil markets stabilising and transport routes reopening, there is cautious optimism that fuel prices could continue to soften in the coming period.
