The price of petrol in the Netherlands has dropped by nearly 5 cents this week, following a record peak on Saturday. The recommended forecourt price for a litre of unleaded (Euro95) fell from €2.732 on Saturday to €2.684 on Friday, bringing the cost of petrol back below that of diesel. The recommended rate for a litre of diesel stood at €2.703 on Friday, down from its own record high set in September when it was more than 10 cents higher.
These recommended rates are typically only charged at more expensive petrol stations along motorways, with local forecourts charging lower prices. Forecourt tariffs usually track crude oil markets with a brief delay, and raw oil costs eased slightly this week; however, Brent crude remained well over $105 per barrel on Friday. Fuel costs remain heavily inflated due to ongoing military tensions in the Middle East, with shipping through the crucial Strait of Hormuz remaining largely restricted following strikes launched by the US and Israel against Iran in late February.
