Nijmegen hospital staff not contagious after potential hantavirus exposure

Share

Twelve employees at Radboudumc who are in precautionary quarantine after potential exposure to the hantavirus are not contagious to others. The hospital in Nijmegen confirmed this through blood tests, according to a statement on its website.

The situation arose after it was revealed that the hospital did not follow the correct international safety protocols when treating a patient with the virus last week. During the processing of blood samples and the disposal of urine, twelve staff members may have come into contact with the virus. Hospital officials previously stated that the risk of actual infection remains very small.

The hospital has not released further details regarding the blood tests or the employees’ current health. A spokesperson for Radboudumc explained that they cannot provide specific updates due to privacy concerns, but noted that undergoing a six-week quarantine has a significant impact on those involved.
