Police began removing climate activists from the A12 motorway on Saturday morning. Members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) had occupied a section of the road near De Meern, close to Utrecht.
Officers intervened physically to remove protesters from the road surface. Those removed were placed onto coaches that had arrived earlier under police escort. Before taking action, the police asked the activists to leave voluntarily and warned that force could be used if they did not comply.
A reporter from the ANP news agency observed that some activists had chained themselves to the guardrails. To remove these individuals, officers began unscrewing parts of the metal barrier. While some protesters required physical removal, another group of activists walked to the waiting buses voluntarily.
