The Red Cross has collected 1.6 million euros in donations via (giro 6868) for emergency relief after severe flooding in Nepal last week. The aid organisation said this support allows it to directly provide thousands of people with clean drinking water, food, blankets and hygiene products.
Plans are also being drawn up for long-term support. The organisation intends to help families rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods. In addition, the Red Cross plans to deliver healthcare using mobile clinics over the coming period.
According to the Red Cross, around 93,000 people have been affected by the disaster, and more than 6,000 houses have been completely destroyed. Red Cross staff member Fleur Verwer reported from the disaster area that mud reached the second floor of some buildings, swallowing entire houses. She noted that residents are attempting to shovel mud out of their homes while searching for missing relatives, adding that entire villages have become unlivable.
