Temperatures in the Netherlands are set to rise again from Wednesday, with weather service Weeronline forecasting local highs of 30 to 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Friday. The incoming heat brings a strong possibility of a fifth regional heatwave (hittegolf) this summer.
Conditions will briefly turn cooler on Monday and Tuesday due to a north-westerly wind. Temperatures will range between 20 and 23 degrees in the north-west, reaching around 28 degrees in Limburg. A shift to south-easterly winds on Wednesday will bring warm, dry air back across the country. The heat will be most intense on Thursday and Friday in the east and south-east, where the regional heatwave threshold is expected to be met.
To officially qualify as a regional heatwave, an official Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) weather station must record temperatures of at least 25 degrees for five consecutive days, including three days exceeding 30 degrees. Temperatures passed 25 degrees across many parts of the country on Saturday, starting the potential run.
