Twenty-seven asylum seekers stayed overnight at the emergency shelter in Gieten, in the province of Drenthe, from Saturday to Sunday, according to the Dutch Red Cross. The previous night, the shelter accommodated 25 people. The temporary facility, located in the De Goorns sports hall, has space for 150 people.
The municipality of Aa en Hunze has been providing overnight accommodation for asylum seekers since last Thursday. They will continue to do so until Monday. The shelter is intended for people who are unable to stay at the central registration centre. It is operated by the Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) in Ter Apel. After each overnight stay, they are taken back to the registration centre.
The registration centre in Ter Apel has been operating beyond capacity since 20 May, and the COA has been unable to provide accommodation for everyone. Several municipalities have since opened temporary overnight shelters. A permanent solution to the shortage of reception places has not yet been found.
