Former Social and Economic Council (SER) President Mariëtte Hamer is set to head the GroenLinks-PvdA joint list for the Senate. Following next year’s provincial elections, she will succeed current parliamentary leader Paul Rosenmöller, who announced his departure from politics last Sunday. Hamer chaired the SER from 2014 to 2022, having previously served as a Labour Party (PvdA) MP from 1998.

Hamer has stated her ambition to deliver “pragmatic politics with workable policies that deliver tangible benefits for the public.” She aims to foster an “inclusive approach” towards “anyone willing to collaborate and help move the country forward.” Candidate selection committee chair Dorrit de Jong praised Hamer as a “shrewd negotiator” with a “distinctly progressive outlook.”

Hamer currently serves as Government Commissioner on Sexual Misconduct until the end of the year. In 2021, she also played a key role as an informateur during the coalition negotiations for the fourth Rutte cabinet.
