Stormy weather forecasts have forced the cancellation of numerous public events across the Netherlands this weekend, while ferry operators to the Wadden Islands have scaled back services.
Met office predictions show Storm Austen sweeping in from the south-west on Friday afternoon, with Storm Boelo set to follow on Saturday, bringing dangerously strong wind gusts across the country.
High-profile cancellations include Middelburg’s ‘Night of the Night’ cultural event, the Northwave Asopos Autumn Regatta in Amstelveen, and Friday evening sports training sessions nationwide.
Travel and Memorials Disrupted
Ferry services to Ameland, Terschelling, and Vlieland face altered, reduced timetables until Monday. In The Hague, an outdoor memorial event at Westduin Cemetery was postponed as council officials noted the storm would ruin the “dignity and atmosphere” of the occasion.
Elsewhere, the Arcen Castle Gardens light display and Puttershoek autumn market were both scrapped. In Breda, fairground operators took the early decision to close the Chasséveld funfair on Friday afternoon, with decisions on weekend opening times still pending.
