PHP abuse signals traced outside the Netherlands

Signs that hackers are targeting major security flaws in the PHP coding language have not come from the Netherlands, officials have confirmed. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is looking into reports shared by international partners, but says no Dutch sites have been hit so far.

The watchdog revealed on Thursday that an investigation is ongoing, with no firm date for when full results will be shared. The two security flaws affect PHP, which runs millions of websites around the world, leaving unpatched platforms open to cyberattacks.

Wednesday saw widespread confusion as dozens of major websites were taken down as a precaution. Many have since returned online after developers issued security patches. Cyber chiefs are now telling organisations not to wait for signs of trouble, but to install the security updates straight away.
