Amber Alert campaign to recognize unsafe home situations

Share

Amber Alert Europe is launching a campaign to help adults recognise signs of an unsafe home environment for children. The goal is to prevent children from running away. The campaign will start in 20 countries, including the Netherlands.

The organisation says thousands of children go missing each year after leaving home. It identifies an unsafe home situation as a major cause. Amber Alert Europe notes that warning signs are often visible long before a child disappears. However, adults who interact with children may miss or misunderstand these signals.

The campaign aims to train teachers, sports coaches, neighbours, care providers, and other trusted adults to recognise these signs.

“A missing child is often the culmination of a much longer story,” said Frank Hoen, founder and chair of Amber Alert Europe. “If we can help adults recognise the signs earlier, we can prevent children from ever reaching that breaking point.”

Signals

The campaign highlights five key signs that may point to domestic violence. These include sudden changes in behaviour, unexplained injuries, a child who is constantly on guard, fear of going home, and difficulty expressing feelings.

It also promotes a simple three-step plan: recognise the signs, reach out, and report concerns.

The campaign will launch on Monday, International Day of the Missing Children. Most participating countries are in Europe, but the United States is also involved.
