Banks urge tech firms to fight fraud

Share

The Dutch Banking Association (De Nederlandse Vereniging van Banken – NVB) wants big tech and social media firms to do more against online fraud. The NVB claims that most scams start on social media platforms. Without their help, banks feel they are fighting a losing battle. NVB chair Medy van der Laan urged these companies to remove fake adverts and fraudulent websites immediately.

Financial losses increase

New data shows that bank helpdesk fraud cost victims €25.8 million in 2025. This represents a €3 million increase from the previous year. Phishing losses also grew by €1.8 million to reach nearly €2.6 million. In helpdesk scams, criminals pose as bank staff to steal money or bank cards.

Tech giants defend measures

Meta and TikTok both reject the banks’ accusations. Meta stated they do not recognise the claims made by the NVB. TikTok insists they take every possible step to prevent fraud on their platform. Both companies say they remove illegal content and join anti-fraud initiatives.

Fewer victims but higher costs

The number of fraud victims actually fell by 14 per cent last year to 5,900 people. Banks believe their awareness campaigns and security measures are working. Total losses remain much lower than the €50 million recorded in 2022. Banks reimbursed roughly 45 per cent of all helpdesk fraud losses in 2025.
