Bird flu outbreak confirmed at Biddinghuizen poultry farm

Share

A significant outbreak of bird flu has been confirmed at a laying hen farm in Biddinghuizen, Flevoland, prompting the Ministry of Agriculture to take swift action. To curb the potential spread of the virus, 55,000 chickens on the site were culled as a precautionary measure. This latest detection has triggered strict emergency protocols across the region to protect the wider poultry industry.

In response to the infection, authorities have established a 10-kilometre restriction zone around the affected farm. This cordon includes a total transport ban, meaning that birds, hatching eggs, and eggs intended for consumption cannot be moved into or out of the area. Additionally, the disposal of bird manure and used litter is strictly prohibited within this perimeter to prevent environmental contamination.

The restrictions are expected to have a significant impact on the local agricultural economy, as 25 commercial poultry farms fall within the newly defined zone. These businesses must now adhere to the ban on movements as health officials monitor the situation. The Ministry continues to oversee the site and surrounding area to ensure the virus does not migrate to other nearby facilities.
