Chemical conglomerate Dow plans to cut 605 jobs in the Netherlands. Management informed employees and staff representatives of the decision on Wednesday. The significant workforce reduction forms part of a broader, global restructuring strategy aimed at driving down operational costs.
Severe impact on Dutch operations
The job cuts will heavily impact the company’s footprint in the Netherlands, where Dow currently employs around 2,800 people. This means the restructuring will eliminate more than 20 percent of the total Dutch workforce.
The US-based multinational operates a massive industrial complex with multiple manufacturing plants in Terneuzen, Zeeland. This strategic facility serves as one of Dow’s largest production hubs outside the United States, specialising in the manufacturing of plastics, chemicals, and essential raw industrial materials.
Negotiations and union consultation
It remains unclear how many of these job losses will result in compulsory redundancies. Before implementing the layoffs, Dow must navigate a mandatory consultation procedure with the works council (ondernemingsraad) of its Dutch division.
Company executives stated that they will carry out this process with the clear objective of minimizing the overall impact on the workforce. Management claims it wants to collaborate with labor representatives to find socially responsible solutions, which could include voluntary departure schemes, early retirement packages, or internal reassignments.
A global push for efficiency
The targeted cuts in the Netherlands follow a major corporate announcement made in January. Dow revealed plans to eliminate roughly 4,500 jobs globally from its total worldwide workforce of approximately 35,000 employees.
The parent company designed these aggressive cost-cutting measures to boost overall profitability amid shifting global market conditions. To achieve this, the executive board is actively flattening the corporate hierarchy by removing multiple layers of management. Additionally, Dow intends to accelerate factory automation and streamline its manufacturing processes to achieve higher production efficiency.
