Cyclists can beat the lights with one app

Share

Cyclists in parts of the Netherlands can get a green light more quickly by using a special app on their phones. ‘Smart’ traffic lights, which adapt to real-time traffic conditions, receive a signal as a cyclist approaches, helping them pass through intersections more quickly.

How it works

Thousands of these smart traffic lights, also known as intelligent traffic control systems, are already in operation across the country. Their main purpose is to improve traffic flow, and they already prioritise emergency vehicles, public transport, and freight traffic.

“It’s as if you press the pedestrian button in advance while cycling toward the light,” said South Holland provincial executive Jeroen van Dijken (Traffic and Transport, VVD). “In many cases, that means you can keep moving without stopping”.

The app

Several provinces, including North Brabant, have launched an app to encourage cycling. A new feature, called “Da’s zo gefietst” (“That’s a quick bike ride”), allows traffic lights to turn green faster when a cyclist approaches. The feature works at all compatible smart traffic lights nationwide.

According to the developers, the app connects temporarily to traffic systems without storing personal or device data. Users can also earn points for cycling, which can be redeemed for rewards.

The app will make cycling more appealing and increase accessibility across different regions of the country.
