D66 opposes asylum laws in Senate, raising doubts over majority

Share

D66 is also opposed in the Senate to the asylum laws drafted by former minister for asylum affairs Marjolein Faber (PVV). As a result, support from the Christian Democratic Appeal (CDA) is needed to secure a majority. It is not yet clear whether the CDA will back the legislation. The party did not support it in the House of Representatives.

During the Senate debate, D66 senator Boris Dittrich said his party had many objections to the proposals. He pointed in particular to the PVV amendment that would criminalise illegal immigration, which he described as poorly drafted.

According to Dittrich, the amendment would need to be revised in any case. Even then, D66 would still vote against it, he said.

“Do these laws ensure that we gain more control over migration in a way that is effective and fair?” Dittrich asked during the debate. He said he does not believe the legislation is well structured. As a result, he argues it will not achieve its intended effect.
