The Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit- NVWA) confiscated nearly 220,000 vapes and 50,000 boxes of nicotine pouches in a single week. Inspectors discovered the prohibited goods at a business in South Holland and a storage facility in North Brabant. The owners of these items are now liable for the costs of their destruction.
Inspectors found three shipping containers in the Hoeksche Waard municipality earlier this month. These containers held approximately 151,500 sweet-flavoured vapes and 50,000 boxes of nicotine pouches. Following a tip-off, officials searched a storage unit in North Brabant, where they uncovered an additional 66,000 vapes and 2,640 nicotine pouches.
Risks to young people
The NVWA warns that sweet flavours specifically target young people. These products are highly addictive and harmful, which has led to a total ban on their sale in the Netherlands. Nicotine exposure is particularly dangerous for those under 25, as it can permanently alter brain development, affecting attention, mood, and impulse control.
Beyond addiction, these products cause significant physical damage. Inhaling the chemicals in vapes can lead to lung inflammation and severe respiratory injury. Both vapes and pouches strain the cardiovascular system by increasing heart rate and blood pressure. While some ingredients may be food-safe, heating them creates toxic compounds that damage the heart and lungs.
Protecting future generations
This large-scale seizure highlights the ongoing effort to keep illegal nicotine products away from children. By removing these items from circulation, the NVWA aims to prevent a new generation from falling into lifelong addiction. These actions serve as a clear warning that the sale of prohibited, health-damaging products will face strict consequences.
