Dutch consumers spent more in March after spending fell in the previous two months. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported that consumption was 0.9 per cent higher than a year earlier. In January and February, consumer spending declined by 0.5 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively.
According to Statistics Netherlands, spending on durable goods increased. Consumers spent more on cars, electrical appliances, and household goods. Spending also rose on transport and communication, medical services, and housing.
By contrast, spending on food and other goods declined, including energy and motor fuels, CBS said. Lower spending was also reported in the hospitality, recreation, and culture sectors.
The agency added that conditions for consumption in April were less favourable than in March. This was mainly due to a more negative outlook among consumers on their financial situation over the next twelve months. The year-on-year increase in stock prices was also smaller.
