Dutch gas reserves fall to the lowest level in a decade

Share

Dutch gas reserves have dropped to 5.8 per cent, their lowest level in ten years. The figure comes from the National Energy Dashboard run by gas grid operator Gasunie, which has fully tracked storage levels since 2016.

Gas is stored in underground facilities in Norg, Grijpskerk, Alkmaar, Bergermeer and Zuidwending. Reserves fell over the winter due to gas use for heating and are due to be refilled in the spring.

The largest storage site, in Norg in the province of Drenthe, is now virtually empty. The facilities in Alkmaar and Grijpskerk are each filled to less than 1 per cent.

“Although the fill level of the gas storage facilities is extremely low, winter is virtually over, and the filling season is approaching. We are monitoring the gas flows closely. At this moment, we see that the supply of gas to the Netherlands is stable,” a Gasunie spokesperson said.

The previous lowest level was recorded on 30 March 2018, when underground reserves stood at 6.19 per cent. Between 2016 and 2025, gas reserves were filled to just under one-third on average on 25 March.
