Massive holiday traffic is causing severe congestion on major routes to Southern Europe. The ANWB motoring organisation reports that traffic has ground to a halt at traditional summer bottlenecks.
This gridlock directly impacts the Netherlands as peak school holidays begin. Thousands of Dutch families are leaving the country simultaneously. This mass departure creates heavy congestion on domestic roads. Drivers face significant delays on the A2 motorway southbound towards Maastricht and the Belgian border. Heavy traffic also clogs the A50 and A12 motorways as travellers head toward Germany.
Major bottlenecks freeze French and German roads
In France, Dutch holidaymakers face hours of delays on the A7 motorway between Lyon and Orange. The worst gridlock occurs near Valence.
Meanwhile, motorists in Germany experience heavy traffic jams on the A8 motorway from Munich to Salzburg. The longest queues form between Neukirchen and the Austrian border.
Severe delays across Austria, Switzerland, and Italy
In Austria, traffic moves slowly on the A11 motorway from Salzburg to Villach. Further down the route, drivers face additional delays before the Karawanken Tunnel on the A11 from Villach towards Ljubljana in Slovenia.
Travelers face similar issues in Switzerland and Italy. On the Swiss A2 motorway between Lucerne and Chiasso, major bottlenecks form before Altdorf, Amsteg, and the Gotthard Tunnel. In Italy, drivers come to a standstill on the A14 motorway between Bologna and Imola on the route towards Rimini.
