Eindhoven city council approves preliminary design for Market Square

Eindhoven City Council has approved the preliminary design for the Markt redesign. This is the first step in transforming the stone-heavy and outdated square in the heart of the city into a more attractive destination. Construction will start in the first quarter of 2028.

This project represents the final phase of the city centre’s “red brick” street redesign. Work is currently underway on the Demer, followed by Vrijstraat, Marktstraat, Nieuwstraat, and Hermanus Boexstraat.

“The Market is an important square for our city centre, where people enjoy meeting,” said Alderperson Rik Thijs. “Over the past few months, many residents and business owners have contributed ideas for the redesign. The current sketch is a great start towards creating a lively square that invites people to meet on the square itself, on a terrace, or during an event.”

Adjacent streets, Jan van Lieshoutstraat, Jan van Hooffstraat, and Catharinaplein, will be included in the redevelopment in a later stage. The preliminary design focuses on creating a vibrant space that balances cafe terraces, greenery, and public seating. The new layout will feature benches and terraces. While existing height differences on the square would be levelled to improve accessibility.

The square will remain a venue for events, with the open space in the centre capable of hosting a carnival tent in the future. Art objects will also remain part of the landscape. Opinions from local entrepreneurs and event planners will be considered in the planning.

The design introduces more nature to the area. Four large, individual trees will provide shade and support biodiversity. A “tree island” on the north side of the square will be added while retaining the existing trees. A children’s play area and the return of the carousel are also on the cards.
