The Municipality of Eindhoven officially opened Fietsbank Eindhoven (bicycle bank) on 12 March. This new initiative ensures that residents on low incomes can purchase a refurbished second-hand bicycle for a small fee.
The project uses bicycles that have been left uncollected at the municipal bicycle depot. The municipality has partnered with the foundation Stichting Ervaring de Staat to manage the repair and distribution of these bikes. Residents aged 18 and over who qualify for a meedoenbijdrage (social participation contribution) can purchase a bicycle for 20 euros. The scheme aims to make 500 bicycles available every year.
A bicycle is often essential for independent participation in society, providing freedom to work, go to school, shop, and socialise. However, owning one is not a given for everyone. Through the Fietsbank, the city aims to remove financial barriers and promote equal opportunities, health, and sustainable travel.
“Cycling offers people opportunities, freedom, and the chance to participate fully in our city,” said Alderperson for Mobility, Robert Strijk. “However, not everyone in our city has a bicycle. Fietsbank Eindhoven aligns with our broader ambition to make cycling accessible to everyone.”
Stichting Ervaring die Staat refurbishes the bicycles in Kanaaldijk-Noord. Here, volunteers with a passion for mechanics refurbish the bikes under the supervision of a master craftsman. This approach provides social impact by offering work-study placements and structured daytime activities. It also supports a circular economy by giving materials and bicycles a second life within the city.
Els Keet, Director of Stichting Ervaring die Staat, welcomed the partnership: “We can expand our workshop and provide more people with a place to learn while making others happy with a reliable bicycle. It really is a win-win situation.” Residents are encouraged to take free lessons if they cannot safely cycle. Once they have completed their training, they become eligible to purchase a bicycle through the bank.
