Eindhoven’s new city government takes shape

Share

After weeks of intensive negotiations, Eindhoven is finally set to get a new city government. The negotiating teams of PRO, CDA, and D66 walked out of the Stadhuis on Sunday, May 31st, with a principal agreement in hand. A milestone that marks the end of a long formation process and the beginning of a new chapter for the city.

More than promises

The agreement contains concrete ambitions, measurable goals, and specific measures the coalition commits to taking. Topics covered include housing, social and community facilities. It also extends to culture, area development, mobility, Eindhoven Airport, the economy, employment and participation, education, and social support.

Tough negotiations

The road to Monday’s agreement was not without its hurdles. Talks throughout May were intensive, with the negotiating teams meeting regularly to work through a broad and complex agenda. On May 20th, the parties reached an agreement of eight aldermen and the portfolios.

Financial principles, often the thorniest part of any coalition formation, were discussed in depth on May 23rd. This was revisited on May 28th, when remaining points of contention were also addressed. The final stretch came on May 30th and 31st, when all themes were laid side by side in a single document and carefully weighed for balance. The parties also discussed how the new college and the city council will work together.

Stadhuis

Not all of the talks took place within the walls of the Stadhuis. Negotiators also stepped outside, sometimes literally. The Philips Fruittuin and building Donna on Strijp-S served as informal settings where team members could clear their heads, take a walk, and exchange ideas away from the negotiating table. A reminder that even the most formal political processes have a distinctly human side.

What happens next

On the evening of Monday, June 1st, the principal agreement was presented to the three-party groups. In the coming days, each party will share the plans with their own members and supporters. After that, the agreement will be formally presented to the city, followed by a debate in the Eindhoven city council. Exact dates are yet to be announced.

A new chapter

For a city in the midst of major transitions while seamlessly leading its role as the Brainport region, the arrival of a new, action-oriented coalition will be welcomed by many. The formateur extended thanks to all who contributed. The full agreement will be made public in the coming days.
