Gas reserves in the Netherlands slowly being replenished after hitting rock bottom

Share

Gas reserves in the Netherlands are gradually increasing again. Gas grid operator Gasunie reports that stocks rose on Monday to 5.1 percent, up from 4.5 percent last week. Energy companies have been allowed to refill storage sites for the coming winter since April. Many questioned whether they would do so, as gas prices have surged due to the war in the Middle East.

Companies carried out the first refill last Thursday. A cold winter had pushed reserves to their lowest level in at least ten years.

Gasunie continues to stress that the low storage level does not warrant an alarm. The reserves act as a seasonal buffer for winter use. The Netherlands also receives steady supplies through pipelines from Norway and through liquefied natural gas shipments.

Gas prices have risen sharply since the conflict began. As a result, replenishing reserves has become a costly task.
